Saw this on tumblr first, but - oh hey - its great to see patterns on the clothing - I wonder - is it hard to create the squares? Or even shading patterned fabric - like maybe you do it carefully (the shades) on top again or you just use something like tool which darkens the existing layers?
Hehe thanks! I have 2 layers to work with on the dress. The bottom layer is the light purple -- I fill the entire area of the dress with that light purple. Then I lock the transparency on the layer and shade it with shadows and light areas, as if I wanted the dress to be just that purple.
then I make a new layer on top for the dark purple squares. I use clipping layer mode on this layer so I don't have to worry about colouring outside of the dress. I draw the squares, trying to incorporate the shape of the fabric, with the curves and angle the squares would wrap around. Lock transparency and shade/highlight so the squares blend with the dark/light ares on the light purple layer.
